Altered Magazine Pages With Easy Overpainting: Painting on Magazines and Coffee Table Book Papers
Today we look at more ways to alter and distress glossy pages from magazines and coffee table books with overpainting so that they become something else that you can use in your journal pages, collage, or other mixed media work. Overpainting is just that, painting or colouring over the original image once the gloss has been sanded off.
I am showing overpainting with watercolour, gouache, gesso and soft pastel, and a combination of these.
If you have any questions, feedbacks, or ideas of your own, please add them to the comments below and we can compare notes.

Five Lessons from a 60 Year Old Journal

Today I have a flip through of a very special travel diary. It is over 60 years old and belongs to my husband who made it when he was 21 years old and traveling from France to India. The thing I find about art in a journal, is that you remember the day when you flip through and look back. More so than with photos. I find most people are curious because yoh don't often see people drawing in public. If you are brave enough, have a chat with them.

      Hi Paige. Gouache is a paint that is heavier than a watercolour but it is water-based as opposed to acrylic paint which has a plastic base. But remember, you do not have to use gouache because I did, especially since I used them since they were all I had on hand and the only reason I have them is that I won them in a drawing a while back! I tend to work in watercolour and ink. Now go give it a try! Kelly

    I find these techniques fascinating; however, my concern has to do with copyright laws. It is my understanding that if you use copyright images they must be unrecognizable when you are finished. Many of what you do leaves the images recognizable. How do you deal with that? Thanks!

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts 17 часов назад

      Hi Kathy, what a good question. There are two things in play here. One is that most of these images are in the public domain meaning that they can be used freely and for commercial use. Next, there is law called Fair Use which says something like you can use an image to make a new image if it is an original and unique piece. It does not have to be wholly unrecognisable. Have a look online and do a little reading about Fair Use and it should put your mind at ease. Keep me posted! Kelly

    With glossy paper, the ink is sitting on top of a coating meant to grab ink during printing so the ink is going to smear a bit and come off as you go along. With matte (uncoated) paper, some of the ink sinks into the paper and combined with it being a non-slick surface the ink is pretty much going to stay put. Since the matte paper lacks a coating, the paper won't be as durable either.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts 17 часов назад

      Thanks for touching base. This is interesting. In my experience the matte paper did not do as well but it did turn into kind of a wool felt-like feeling.

    I only just found your lovely video and recommendations (knew of some, some are new!), so I'm late to the game but will contribute anyway. Some sites that have free vintage images are Heritage Type, The Graphics Fairy, Old Book Illustrations and Project Gutenberg (which is more about copyright-free books, but I love the illustrations in old children's books). For photos, there's always Unsplash and similar sites for current royalty-free images, but so many vintage treasures can be found on Flickr under The Commons and the Smithsonian Institution, for example, and there's an oddly captivating "Sociological Record" collection compiled by Zofia Rydet in Poland after WWII. Hi Sandra, you are quite right if you use them right away but if you give it a few days and/or help a little with a heat gun, they should "cure" and be usable. You can also seal them with a coat of gel medium or mod podge, etc. Hope this helps.

      Thank you for getting in touch. I am so very grateful to be able to make pep talks. We all need to be reminded that we have the right and the DUTY to be creative, to be bold, and take chances. By the way, your bike tours look amazing! I am going to be in Italy in a week, in Montefiascone near Orvieto.

    Just found your channel and I was so excited to see this video! So glad you posted it! Our house is surrounded by giant walnut trees. Thank you.

      Hello and welcome, Laurie. You know, either you live around or lots of walnuts or none. I got lucky and found a bunch in a corner of a parking lot and I knew what I had to do. 😺
